MUMBAI: Mhada has submitted plans for the redevelopment of three slums on its land in partnership with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). SRA CEO Mahendra Kalyankar said the authority has identified 228 slum schemes in Mumbai on land owned by various govt agencies that have been stalled for years.
These have now been given to various govt agencies for redevelopment in a joint venture with the SRA. Mhada, or the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority, is the second agency after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to submit plans.
Mhada has submitted proposals for the redevelopment of slums on its land at Jogeshwari (80 slum households), Chembur (117) and Kurla (110). “All of these will be redeveloped under Regulation 33(10) of the Development Control and Promotion Regulations 2034, which is specifically applicable to slums. While the SRA will carry out surveys, relocate slum dwellers, provide rent and even demolish the hutments, the redevelopment work will be carried out by Mhada, which will also finance the project. The sale component will go entirely to Mhada,” said Kalyankar.
Among such government agencies, the MMRDA has been assigned (and taken up) the redevelopment of the Ramabai Nagar slums in Ghatkopar (East), BMC has been assigned 77 slum schemes, Mhada 24, MSRDC 46, Cidco six, MMRDA five, MAHAPRIT 57, MIDC 12 and Maha Housing one. At present there are approximately 2.2 lakh slum households on these lands.
In case of Ramabai Nagar, the SRA completed the eligibility survey of 16,000 slum households within six months. The households have been issued cheques for rent for two years. They have also been provided with post-dated cheques for rent for one year. SRA officials said the vacant plot will be handed over to the MMRDA by May-end.
The redevelopment of slums along with affordable housing have been identified as among the key drivers to achieve a $1 trillion economy in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region by 2030.
The report ‘Developing MMR as a Global Economic Hub’, released by the Mahayuti govt before the general election, states that there are 2.2 million slums and to rehabilitate all of these would require that at least 2.8-3 lakh slum households are resettled every year. The existing slum scheme has been able to resettle only 5,000-16,000 per year, states the report.
