KOLKATA: The last date for taxpayers residing in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) area of Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur to clear all the quarters of their property tax for the 2024-25 financial year via online methods is set for April 5. After this, BMC will generate tax demand notices for the financial year 2025-26.
The civic authorities have posted a notice on their official website, stating that property tax collection through online for all quarters of the financial year 2024-25 will stop at midnight on the coming Saturday (April 5) while payment by cash will stop after coming Friday (April 4). For those paying tax by cheque or demand draft, the last date for payment is today (March 31).
The civic body aims to generate and increase more property tax collection this year. The authorities increased property tax collection estimates from Rs 40 crore last year to Rs 44 crore this year. BMC is also in discussions with a bank to introduce the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) as an additional payment mode option for taxpayers, apart from the existing online and offline modes. “The aim is to bring more convenience to taxpayers to pay their property tax through a mobile app,” said a civic official.
The civic body has already started sending property tax bills to taxpayers of wards 27 and 28, covering Mahisbathan and Nayapatti, who completed the assessment and mutation process of their properties. “Residents of these areas did not pay property tax to date. They used to pay ‘khajna’ or land revenue to the local BLRO office,” officials said.
Officials stated that the West Bengal Valuation Board was conducting a thorough assessment of the BMC property tax structure to prepare a new uniform property tax structure for all its 41 wards based on the Unit Area Assessment system.
