CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has collected Rs 58.6 crore in property taxes, almost Rs 3 crore more than the last fiscal (2023-2024), in the financial year ending Monday.

Officials said the figure is likely to go up as the taxes paid by the e-Sampark centres in the UT are yet to be calcutated.

Of the total amount received so far, the lion’s share (Rs 42 crore) came from commercial establishments. The rest were from residential properties. Some of it were pending arrears, while the remaining amount was against bills of the outgoing financial year. In 2023-24, the civic body had collected Rs 55.59 crore in property taxes.

MC sources said since the tax on commercial properties is significantly higher than those levied on residential ones, the maximum collection comes from the former every year. Besides, many properties are still under litigation, so large amounts of arrears are still pending, they added.

Of the 1.42 lakh properties in the UT as per FY 2024-25 records, 1.12 lakh are residential and the remaining 30,000 are commercial holdings.

New properties have been added in the current financial year following a physical survey by MC. Most of these are residential properties.
