RANCHI: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) set a new benchmark in property tax collection for the financial year ending on Monday, March 31. The corporation has collected over Rs 80.64 crore from 1,67,372 property owners, making it the highest property tax-collecting municipal body in Jharkhand.
A significant portion of the tax came from door-to-door visits during which over Rs 41.81 crore was collected from 1,06,019 taxpayers. Digital payments also played a crucial role with 32,373 individuals contributing over Rs 17.05 crore. Additionally, over Rs 5.38 crore was collected at the Jan Suvidha Kendras at the RMC’s main office and its Doranda zonal office.
On the last day of the financial year alone, 897 taxpayers paid Rs 91,45,230.
Apart from property tax, the RMC also recorded substantial revenue collection from other sources. Water tax collections amounted to over Rs 12.02 crore while trade licenses generated Rs 2.16 crore from 18,370 applications.
These collections will be crucial in funding civic infrastructure projects, sanitation drives and beautification efforts in the city, officials said.
Assistant municipal commissioner Chandradeep Kumar said, “This record-breaking collection reflects the growing awareness among the citizens about their tax responsibilities. The revenue will be used to improve public amenities and make Ranchi a cleaner and more organised city. We appealed to all property owners to continue their timely contributions for the city’s betterment.”
To ensure tax compliance, RMC took proactive measures like keeping collection centres open even on holidays like March 30 and 31. Officials have also encouraged taxpayers to use the corporation’s online portal for hassle-free payments.
“Property owners failing to pay by the deadline will face incremental penalties of 1% in the first week, 2% in the second week, 3% after a month and 5% after two months. On the other hand, an owner who pays the tax in the first quarter before June for the ongoing financial year gets a 10% rebate,” deputy municipal commissioner Gautam Sahu said.
