MOHALI: In a significant push to recover pending dues, the Zirakpur Municipal Council (MC) collected over Rs 45 lakh in property tax arrears on the last day of 2024-25 financial year. This has taken the civic body’s total property tax earnings to Rs 22.38 crore in the outgoing fiscal, marking a major success in its tax collection drive.
Executive officer Ashok Patharia said, “The council received Rs 27 lakh in cash and Rs 18 lakh through cheques on March 31 alone, taking the day’s total collection to over Rs 45 lakh. About 2,000 to 3,000 property owners paid property tax for the first time in the last 10 years after receiving notices.”
The MC had issued warnings to individuals and business establishments that had defaulted on property tax payments for the last 12 years. The notices threatened strict action, including sealing of properties, if the outstanding amounts were not paid by March 31. To facilitate last-minute payments, the council office remained open on Saturday, Sunday, and even on Monday, which was a holiday for Eid.
Patharia credited the record collections to stringent measures taken to recover the long-pending dues. “Sealing notices were issued to those who failed to deposit the outstanding amount within the deadline. Such a decisive action ensures that all residents and businesses contribute their share toward the city’s development,” he said.
Calling the recovery drive a major accomplishment, Patharia highlighted the effectiveness of the municipal council’s efforts and urged those who have yet to pay their dues to do so at the earliest.
The funds collected will be utilised for infrastructure development, including roads, sanitation and other essential civic amenities. Reaffirming the MC’s commitment to the city’s development, Patharia said, “The success of this campaign is a step towards our goal of making Zirakpur a well-developed city. We hope more citizens and businesses will actively participate in fulfilling their civic responsibilities in the future.”
