CHENNAI: The state’s urban habitat development board (TNUHDB) has rolled out a series of upgrades. From renovating 8,352 flats in Perumbakkam at 70 crore to launching a 2-crore worth skill development centre in Kannagi Nagar and wellness initiatives for over 11,000 young women, the state is investing in both infrastructure and community uplift.

A flagship initiative under this plan is the 170 crore renovation of 62,197 apartment units maintained by the board in Chennai and nearby areas. These upgrades, supported by the state and Adi Dravidar welfare department under Ayothidasa Pandithar housing development scheme, are intended to enhance safety and infrastructure in existing residential blocks.

In Perumbakkam, 70 crore was earmarked to upgrade 8,352 flats, aiming to improve housing quality in this key resettlement zone. Similarly, the Okkiyam Thuraipakkam–Ezhil Nagar area will see 40 crore invested in upgrading 6,000 apartment units to ensure secure and improved living conditions.

Beyond housing, the govt is also investing in human development. A 5-crore worth ‘chief minister’s study hub’ will be established in Perumbakkam, providing modern study spaces, e-learning facilities, and private reading areas for students and exam aspirants. Furthermore, a skill development centre worth 2 crore will be constructed in Kannagi Nagar to offer vocational training to local youth, empowering them with job skills.

“Modern skilling facilities will be developed after identifying both local talent and the demand for specific skills. Experts from each field will be engaged to ensure high-quality training,” said Anshul Mishra, managing director, TNUHDB.

In a move aimed at promoting health and awareness, wellness and hygiene kits worth 80 lakh will be distributed to 11,000 young women living in board-maintained housing areas. “We expected specific announcements related to the construction of higher secondary schools and anganwadi centres in the resettlement sites as this is one of the glaring gaps,” said Vanessa Peter, Founder, IRCDUC.
