GUWAHATI: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced an initiative to provide over three lakh households in the city with unique house number plates through the door-to-door geographical information system (GIS) survey, said GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania on Friday. This initiative it will enhance transparency and efficiency in taxation procedures.

The survey is part of the ongoing Smart House Numbering System (SHNS), launched last year, and aims to enhance infrastructure planning, property identification, and municipal services like waste management, emergency response, and taxation.

During a press conference, Sarania said the unique number plates would be assigned following the survey, which uses digital mapping tools to create a centralised property database. The survey has been completed in 27 out of the 60 GMC wards, with plans to finish the remaining areas by the end of the year.

“The existing house numbers will remain unchanged, but new GIS-based number plates will be issued, streamlining various municipal processes,” said Sarania.

“The installation of these plates will begin from this month and we urge residents to cooperate. The survey has been carried out by Geovista Technologies Private Limited,” he added.

GMC officials have confirmed that it will ensure accurate taxation by providing a reliable property assessment process.
