THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fifty nine families residing on govt land classified as ‘forest puramboke‘ in Kadakampally village will be granted land titles, revenue minister K Rajan announced on Tuesday. The decision follows a recent govt order approving distribution of land ownership documents to the families.
For years, these families were denied land titles due to the land being registered under the category ‘forest’ in revenue records.
This misclassification led to confusion, with many assuming the land to be a protected forest area. A detailed examination confirmed the land was ‘forest puramboke’—a non-forest govt land category.
Locals earlier met Rajan in person to submit a formal request. Later, Rajan directed the district collector to investigate and submit a report. The findings clarified that the land in question was not forest and that reclassification was needed to convert it to ‘wasteland’ under the land ownership eligibility criteria.
The collector and land revenue commissioner recommended that, under the provisions of the land assignment rules, the land category could be changed at the discretion of the govt. Acting on this,
Rajan presented the proposal to state cabinet, which approved the reclassification. Subsequently, the govt has now decided to reclassify the land and allot it to eligible families.
