MOHALI: In a major crackdown on unauthorised construction, the enforcement wing of Gmada Friday pulled down 30 illegal structures in Jhampur village and Sector 39 (West) here.
The demolition drive, led by Gmada officer Arvind Pannu, began at 11.30 am and continued till 4 pm. About 25 houses under construction and other illegal structures were razed in Jhampur village alone.
A simultaneous operation was carried out in Phase 3 of the 39 West Society, located in Sector 122, where colonisers were found illegally extending the colony by carving out new plots beyond the sanctioned layout, despite the cancellation of their licence. These unauthorised plots were also linked to the existing infrastructure, including water, sewerage, and electricity connections.
Gmada officials dismantled at least seven such structures during the action in Sector 39 (West).
Hirdesh Madan, secretary of residents’ welfare association (Sector 39-West), said, “We had repeatedly raised this issue with Gmada. This action was necessary and long overdue. However, we also urge Gmada to regularise the project under applicable legal provisions so that innocent residents who have invested their life savings do not continue to suffer.”
