THANE: Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao on Monday ordered a comprehensive survey within a month of all unauthorised residential and commercial constructions in the environmentally sensitive Yeoor area adjoining Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

The move comes amid rising concerns from activists and locals over large-scale illegal commercial activities like weddings, parties, and dining events with loud noise, bands, and fireworks late into the night — all banned in the eco-sensitive zone and impacting the wildlife and local ecosystem. TOI had earlier highlighted the impact where a decline in animal sightings was recorded during the recent forest department census.

During Monday’s review meeting, Rao said the survey will identify illegal structures, particularly those approved for residential use but being misused for commercial purposes. After the survey, notices will be served to owners, followed by joint enforcement operations involving municipal, forest, and police officials to ensure compliance.

The directive aligns with Bombay high court orders and a March 2025 state govt circular that defines the action on illegal constructions in non-development and green zones under Thane Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction. The corporation already started taking action, according to an official statement.

Rao also announced the formation of a coordination committee under his leadership to effectively protect Yeoor’s environment. The team, comprising senior officials from the civic body, forest department, police, revenue department, and NGOs, will oversee planned and sustained management of the sensitive region.

Meanwhile, a municipal survey found 12 unauthorised turf grounds operating in Yeoor area. Action was completed on eight, with two owners agreeing to cease operations by July 10. Two more illegal turfs were identified and will face immediate action, said activist Rohit Joshi, who attended the meeting.
