Mumbai Residents Protest Best’s Attempt to Cut Power and Water Amid Evictions, ETRealty

MUMBAI: The Elphinstone Bridge is once again in the spotlight as residents of a nearby chawl complain of harassment by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) officials.

According to a resident of the Haji Noorani Chawl, BEST officials visited the building on Tuesday attempting to discontinue the electric supply and warned that the water would also be discontinued.

“Today, BEST officials visited and informed us that MHADA has requested to cut off electricity and water supply of the Haji Noorani Chawl, citing that the construction of the building is unsafe. We assembled and restricted the officials from cutting the connection off,” said Munaf Thakur, Secretary and resident of Haji Noorani Chawl, adding that both Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and IT Minister Ashish Shelar had assured the residents that the building would only be addressed after the cluster plan was complete.

Residents of 19 buildings face eviction as their buuildings need to be go to pull down the Elphinstone Bridge. But they have refused to relocate.
