THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Karimadom Colony Housing Complex, featuring 128 newly constructed flats, was inaugurated on Monday, marking another milestone in the city corporation’s efforts to provide affordable housing for the homeless.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by mayor Arya Rajendran, with minister for general education and labour V Sivankutty officially inaugurating the first phase of the project. The complex, built at a cost of Rs 27 crore from the corporation fund, is the first stage of a larger initiative to construct 200 homes at Karimadom.
The civic body has been actively implementing multiple housing projects to turn the dream of a permanent home into reality for residents without shelter. So far, thousands of homes were completed across the city, including 318 flats at Kalladimukham, 115 houses at Kannammoola Bund Colony, 22 flats at Rajajinagar, 432 flats at Karimadom, 542 homes at Mathippuram and 12,380 houses under the LIFE project. Construction for 700 more homes in Mathippuram, Vallakkadavu, and Poonkulam is in its final stages.
The inauguration ceremony at Karimadom was attended by standing committee chairpersons Clines Rosario and Medayil Vikraman, councillor S Salim and several city officials.
The LSG department gave technical sanction for the project to house another 105 affected families last month. Costford, the accredited agency, is the builder of the project and the work will begin within a month after signing an agreement. The period of completion is one year. Each unit costs Rs 21 lakh and there are 105 units in total. The rehabilitation of the residents is part of the Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) rehabilitation project, launched by the city corporation in 2008.
