MUMBAI: The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) and the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) have been appointed as the special planning authority for the 42.51-acre Jamasp Salt Pan land at Mulund East.
In a notification issued on Oct 27, the state urban development department stated that the SRA has been appointed as the special planning authority for the Dharavi area, as well as the railway land adjacent to Dharavi, which is included in the rehabilitation project. It has also been appointed as the special planning authority for the 8.5-hectare Kurla Dairy land.
The Mulund salt pan is part of the 256 acres that the Centre has approved to be handed over for the Dharavi redevelopment project. The land is to be utilised for creating rental housing for the Dharavi residents who are ineligible for free housing in Dharavi.
The DRP and SRA are part of Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL), the special purpose vehicle set up for the implementation of the rehabilitation project.
The NMDPL paid Rs 320 crore to the Salt Commissioner for the Jamasp salt pan land. The DRP and SRA took over physical possession of the salt pan land in April this year.
An official said that since the DRP and SRA are overseeing the entire rehabilitation project, it was natural for them to be the planning authority for all the lands.
There is strong opposition from Mulund residents to the relocation of Dharavi residents to Mulund. Kurla residents have also opposed the relocation and rehabilitation on the Kurla Dairy land.
