GURUGRAM: Civic body councillors met MCG commissioner Ashok Kumar Garg on Tuesday, requesting the establishment of zone-specific construction and demolition (C&D) waste processing facilities in the city. The councillors apprised Garg about the widespread issue of C&D waste being dumped haphazardly throughout the city and demanded “dedicated collection and processing units.”

The civic body operates a single processing facility at Basai, with a daily capacity to handle 300 metric tonnes of construction debris. The operating agency’s collection service is restricted to areas within a 15km radius of the facility. According to an MCG survey in 2023, approximately 10 lakh metric tonnes of C&D waste is scattered throughout the city. The civic authorities have not yet undertaken a new assessment of the situation.

Ward Number 3 councillor Rakesh Yadav said, “Due to the real estate expansion in Gurgaon, continuous construction activities are taking place. The disposal of construction debris has become problematic as it is being discarded on roadsides and in public spaces.”

“We have requested MCG officials to establish zone-specific facilities to ensure that waste from each area is collected and processed at designated locations. At present, lorries collect construction debris and dispose of it indiscriminately wherever space is available,” Yadav said.

The councillors said that MCG officials told them that construction sites would soon be required to provide mandatory disclosure regarding their anticipated construction waste quantities and designated disposal locations.

MCG chief engineer Vijay Dhaka said, “We have directed the councillors to submit the potential sites in their respective wards where we can set up a C&D waste plant. We are now planning to address the issue zone-wise. The councillors will provide us land details and we can then set up plants to address the problem of illegal dumping of C&D waste.”

Another councillor, Anoop Singh, said, “Problems related to C&D waste and sanitation are common across all the wards. Cleanliness doesn’t mean sweeping of roads only. It also means that construction waste, garbage and all sorts of waste should be removed from the roadsides and public places so that Gurgaon looks clean. We have asked for zone-wise C&D waste plants so that this problem of illegal dumping of construction waste is addressed.”

Councillors, at the meeting on Tuesday, also discussed the necessity of restructuring MCG divisions to ensure each ward is assigned to a single division, eliminating confusion in dealing with officers from multiple divisions. They put forth requests for setting up their offices and sought adequate staffing support from the corporation.
