PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has directed developers to display the names of residential and commercial projects in Marathi.

“Central govt has given Marathi the status of classical language. It is mandatory for all the projects, which are being carried out under PMC’s jurisdiction, to prominently display the names of projects in Marathi,” said PMC commissioner Naval Kishore Ram in a circular issued on Friday.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) made a demand about this. “Many developers were not following the mandate of putting the names in Marathi. Now, with the directive of the civic administration, it will be mandatory for them to do it,” said Prashant Kanojia, an MNS member.

He said that after making it mandatory in the terms and conditions for constructions, the administration must make sure that they are monitoring the effective implementation of the directive. “A team of civic officials should visit each site and cross-verify if the name is displayed in Marathi or not.”

The PMC areas have seen a consistent increase in the number of building permissions over the years. Data shows the administration gave 1,709 building permissions in 2023-24 compared to 956 in the 2022-23 financial year. In the 2024-25 fiscal year, the number went up to 3,359.

MNS had also made a demand to check if the names of shops and other commercial establishments are in Marathi, as mandated by the law.
