BENGALURU: The state government has begun final preparations to implement the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) from September 2, replacing the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) with five new municipal corporations. Draft orders for their creation have already been issued, objections received, and the final notification is expected shortly.

The historic BBMP head office, home to the city’s administration since 1947, is being upgraded to function as the Chief Minister’s office in his capacity as Chairperson of the new authority. The Bengaluru Urban Development Minister, serving as Deputy Chairperson, will operate from the renovated Deputy Mayor’s office.

The BBMP headquarters will act as the authority’s central facility, housing revenue, climate action, and administration departments, while annex buildings and other BBMP properties are being repurposed for municipal offices.

The five corporations—Bengaluru East, West, North, South, and Central—will each be allotted office spaces, including the 12-storey Utility Building on MG Road, Govindaraja Kanaka Bhavan, Shakti Soudha in Yelahanka, and a proposed facility in Banashankari. Administrative zones under BBMP will rise from eight to ten, with existing staff mapped and reassigned accordingly.

Revenue collection, including property tax and pending arrears, will be divided among the new corporations. Liabilities of around `1,800–2,000 crore owed to contractors will also be apportioned based on where the works were carried out. A detailed report has been submitted, and the final government order is expected by August-end.
