INDORE: Indore Metro‘s underground track length is likely to be increased from the presently proposed 4 km stretch from Airport to Regal Square by extending it a further 2 km to Khajrana Square.

This was one of the proposals made before the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly‘s Estimates Committee meeting on Monday. The committee urged the swift start of the underground work for the long-awaited Indore Metro project.

The committee, which met on Monday at the Residency Kothi, stated that the work should begin soon after consulting with public representatives and gaining public confidence. The committee will also recommend that the govt allocate funds and make parking mandatory at every Metro station to enhance its utility.

According to official sources, Khajrana Square is the ‘most suitable place’ to take the Metro track underground. It will increase the underground track’s proposed length from around 4 km to a total of 6 km, between Khajrana Square and the Airport. Besides, this is also expected to resolve issues pertaining to land acquisition and station construction.

The committee’s chairman Ajay Vishnoi praised the urban development work and Smart City projects being carried out by Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC). He said that the underground Metro from Khajrana to Kanadia would be a key recommendation for the govt.

Not all feedback was positive. Bhawar Singh Shekhawat, chairman of Public Accounts Committee, criticised the city’s incomplete and old drainage lines, potholes, and the poor condition of roads like the Super Corridor. He also raised concerns about corruption in govt projects and called for better monitoring of road construction and the imposition of penalties on contractors who fail to repair roads after excavation.

The meeting was attended by various officials, including divisional commissioner Deepak Singh and collector Asheesh Singh, along with committee members and other public representatives.
