AHMEDABAD: A routine demolition took a dangerous turn on Saturday evening when debris from a redevelopment project crashed onto a neighbouring apartment complex, damaging homes and raising serious questions about builder safety protocols.
The incident occurred adjacent to the Guru Kripa Apartment on Premchandnagar Road in the Satellite area, where the demolition of the Shagun-1 and Shagun-2 apartments was underway — on either side of the affected apartment. On Saturday evening around 7.45pm, as the demolition proceeded , things went awry.
Heavy debris from the collapsing structures rained down, striking flat No. 7 and 3 of Guru Kripa Apartment. Residents quickly reacted, with the fire department being called . Fortunately, all residents had managed to evacuate, ensuring no one was hurt when the debris hit.
Ketan Shah, the chairman of Guru Kripa Apartment, spoke out, expressing grave concerns about the builder’s actions. He explicitly stated that the builder allegedly initiated the demolition without proper permits or safety clearances and failed to implement adequate safety measures. “We were lucky; we survived,” Shah remarked, highlighting the potential for a much worse outcome. The damage to their two homes, however, is a clear consequence of this alleged negligence.
